Maria Pavlou’s work consist on the idea of expressing emotions through making, her main interests focus on the theme of nature and environment as Maria is heavily influenced by her own nature photography.

Her most recent works consist on the use of materials such as clay and metal, finding a way to explore the idea of connecting materials together by highlighting elements such as the welding spots present on the pieces.

Using her current emotions to dictate the shapes Maria is creating, the making of the maquette is a result of spontaneous decisions made by interacting directly with pieces of scrap metal and clay and turning them into organic shapes. The pieces explore the idea of contrast by being sharp to touch but also making the sculpture look soft and fragile, almost mimicking soft leaves and their movement as the piece physically spins around when touching it, creating a moving element to it. The idea of movement came to Maria as she got inspired by plants being fixed where they are making them having to adapt to their very own environment.

By making her own miniature environments for maquettes to go into, Maria creates calming spaces such as a soft field landscape in which she reflects on how nature and environments we live in affect our lives and overall asks what defines our relation with emotions and nature.
